October 2010 Update

Although much of September was rainy and cool, our more typical sunny and warm fall weather has returned. I just finished conducting my Wildlife Intensive Weekend Workshop here in Edmonton with twelve great people. They all seemed to really enjoy themselves.

On Sunday, we took a field trip to photograph some Prairie Dogs at the world’s most northern Prairie Dog town and we visited a local falconer who allowed us to photograph a number of his beautiful birds. My students all came away with some tremendous images and I am proud of their accomplishments. I hope to offer this workshop again this coming…

Hey you! Where’d you leave your integrity?

I have a problem with photographers who pretend that the image they made of a captive animal was actually an image of a wild animal. In my opinion it is dishonest and does a disservice to the wildlife photography community. I also have an issue with what I consider a lie by omission. Some photographers don’t say whether the images they present are of wild or captive animals and I think they do this as they’d prefer the public to assume they are images of wild animals. I think this is dangerous to both…

How quickly they grow up…

Back in the spring of 2008 I was very happy to learn that the Triple “D” Game Farm had added a young Grizzly cub to their team.  As soon as I was able, I made the trip down to Kalispell to photograph this cute little bundle of energy.  Her name is Rosie and she’s become […]

One wolf, two looks

During my recent visit to the Triple “D” Game Farm I was able to photograph a couple of Grey (aka Gray, Timber) wolves alongside a partially frozen river. They were both beautiful wolves but I was particularly drawn to the dark coloured wolf. I think what drew me to this wolf was its long angular face combined with those great intense eyes that wolves are famous for.

A Red Fox of a different colour

Do some research on the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) and you’ll quickly discover that this relatively common canine comes in an amazing number of colour varieties. And this past Thanksgiving weekend, I got to photograph a silver coloured red fox at the Triple “D” Game Farm. Amazingly, at least to me, this strikingly beautiful fox is the offspring of two, very red coloured Red Foxes. From what I’ve read, only about 5% of Red Foxes have the silver colouration.

Getting low to make eye contact

I was fortunate enough to visit the Triple “D” Game Farm this last weekend. In addition to enjoying my first US Thanksgiving, I was able to get some personal photography in.

One of the critters I got to photograph was a Fisher. Fishers are members of the weasel family and known for their ferocious hunting abilities. They are particularly fond of hares, rabbits, squirrels, mice and even porcupines. They are one of the few animals who regularly, and successfully, prey on porcupines. Fishers are between 29 and 45 inches (65cm – 125cm) in length and males can weigh up to 20 pounds (9 kg).
