Spirit Bear Cover Shot – ISO 3200 Canon 5D Mark II
Posted on 17. Jun, 2010 by Paul Burwell in Business, Everything, Locations, Photography, Workshops, Tours and Courses
While I’ve been kind of silent lately, it certainly isn’t because I haven’t been busy. I’ve been to California with Triple “D” for a California Wildlife Workshop, the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary for a photo tour and have been feverishly working at getting current on the accounting for my business. I’m sure you can guess which of those I enjoyed the least….
Anyway, although I’m a bit uncomfortable doing this, one thing about being in business for yourself is that like it or not, you have to market yourself. And with that said…
Have you seen the cover shot on the Summer/Fall 2010 issue of Outdoor Photography Canada (OPC) Magazine? It’s my shot of a Kermode “Spirit” Bear and there is an accompanying article inside about a trip I lead last fall to photograph these wonderful and uniquely Canadian bears. This isn’t my first cover shot on a magazine, but it is one I’m particularly proud of as I believe it may be one of the first cover shots ever published that was made at ISO 3200.
You can read the story about the making of the cover shot on the OPC web site, but if you want to read the feature article yourself, you’re just going to have to wait until the issue hits the news stands in the next week or two.
If that photo and article gets you thinking about photographing Spirit Bears, I still have a couple of spots open on this fall’s tour of the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada to again photograph these special bears.

Hey Paul,
Congrats on the cover shot! I saw the image when my copy arrived yesterday and guessed that it was yours but hadn’t got around to looking it up yet. Anyway it’s a beautiful image that you should be proud of, regardless of the ISO it was created at.
Cheers, Sean

Paul,
Nothing bad about marketing yourself at all.
Especially with great shots like that!
Congrats on the cover, and fantastic at ISO 3200! I’ve been playing with higher ISO myself lately on the Mark II, and pretty amazing what you can do now with such high ISO shots!

Technology is leveling the playing field. I see the 8 megapixel sensors in cell phones. I remember 30k sensor cameras selling for $30,000. ISO 400 was an upper limit for quality not that long ago. We’re pulling high quality stills from high def video. Micro zoom lenses are on the way. What an amazing time for photographers!

Just stumbled across this magazine at 7 eleven.
I loved the article and images! They are beautiful and the article is informative and entertaining.
It sounds like an amazing experience. You should do a book collecting all your travel and photography experiences.
